Siman 5, se'if 1

(a) What is the general principle regarding having intent when saying brachos? [Request "Halacha Sources" discussion]

The Shulchan Aruch writes (put simply): One should have in mind the meaning of the words.

          [Classic sources: Berachos 47a (point1m1).]

(b) When one is to say Hashem's Name (in brachos), what intent should he have in mind? [Request "Halacha Sources" discussion]

The Shulchan Aruch writes (put simply): [For the four-letter Name,] both the meaning of how it is read (i.e. that he is the Master of all) and how it is written (i.e. that He "was and is and will be"); and for the Name "Elokim" - that He is the All-Powerful One Who Controls All Powers.

          [Classic sources: Pesachim 50a (points2d-g), Kiddushin 71a (points2b-d).]
